Bring a Sufferless perspective to your board

A company’s decisions shape life within the organization and beyond it. They affect the people doing the work, the people using its products and services, and the communities and living world around them.

Zach Charles welcomes conversations with companies interested in board service with a Chief Sufferless Officer (CSO) perspective. The focus is twofold:

  • Within the company: examine workload, working conditions, culture, incentives, relationships, and the capacity employees and leaders have to meet the demands placed on them.
  • Through its products and services: examine what the company provides, how it is designed and delivered, and its consequences for customers, users, communities, and the natural world.

Across both, the question is the same: does a decision reduce suffering, build capacity, or simply move the burden somewhere less visible? Consider the physical, psychological, intellectual, and spiritual domains, across self, relationships, society, and the natural world—and follow what changes over time.

The aim is practical: ask better questions, make hidden consequences visible, and help guide decisions that can be explained, reviewed, and improved. An audit examines a defined question; an ongoing board role brings that perspective into recurring strategic discussions.

The board role, any CSO appointment, responsibilities, and scope would be discussed individually. An engagement does not constitute Sufferless certification.
